The association whose ethics set the industry standard

The most important translators association in Australia is AUSITAustralia also has a professional translators association. In fact, the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT), founded in 1987, gathers both translators and interpreters. It brings together existing local associations at the time and specialist groups.

This fully independent association has branches all over the country and aims to: represent the interests of the profession at all times, both at home and abroad, and promote it with the governments and the corporate sector; instill the highest professional and ethical standards – the AUSIT Code of Ethics is recognized as setting the industry standard –; promote and organise activities such as workshops, conferences, courses and seminars; provide a forum for the study and advancement of translating and interpreting knowledge, practices and procedures; improve public understanding of the profession and work to ensure access to qualified translation and interpretation services to all – this association contributes to advancement in the field of community interpreting in the social, legal and health care sectors.

Although most members of AUSIT are practicing translators and interpreters, this translators association also serves as a meeting place for all who understand the importance of translation and interpreting to the economy and society.

So, if you are not a translator nor represent a translators association, that's ok! Any person or organization interested in supporting and developing the profession is welcome and encouraged to join AUSIT.

You can join this translators and interpreters association, for example, if you are looking for a primary source of information on translation and interpreting services for government, industry, the media, and the general public. Imagine you have a company that is beginning an internationalization process and you need to have presentations, press kits and other documents translated. Contact AUSIT and they will certainly help you. Also, on AUSIT's website you can check out all the benefits of joining this organization or find a translator or an interpreter online.

Finally, know that AUSIT has an online store.

AUSIT is a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), which maintains formal consultative relations with UNESCO, promotes professionalism and takes part in developing international policies regarding the future of the profession.

In Australia, AUSIT and two sister organizations, the Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association (ASLIA) and the Western Australian Institute of Interpreter and Translators (WAITI) – the oldest professional body in Australia –, constitute the recently formed Industry Reference Group: a consultative body on issues related to interpreting and translating.

Australia's official language is English, which is, as you certainly know, spoken in more countries than any other language.

Keep in mind that English has 508 million native speakers.
