Translators Associations Latin America: AGIT

A translators association with extensive experience

Translators Associations Latin America: AGITThe Guatemalan Association of Interpreters and Translators (Asociación Guatemalteca de Intérpretes y Traductores or AGIT) is a non-profit and apolitical trade and professional association, that watches out for translators and interpreters for more than twenty years now.

Its purpose is to protect the legal, economic, moral and social interests of interpreters and translators in Guatemala. This translators association also aims to facilitate the relationships between these professionals with entities engaged in the same activity as AGIT but in other countries.

AGIT members include specialists in different fields such as education, literature, medicine, law, economics and computers.

To become a member of this translation association, one must work as a translator and/or interpreter on a regular basis, either independently or within an agency.

Candidates must have the title of Sworn Translator or prove that they have five years of experience as translators and/ or artists and have the endorsement and recommendation of three active members of AGIT.

If you're interested in becoming a member, know that this translators association expects you to respect and enforce strict rules for a thoroughly professional job.

Other than comply with the regulations, you'll be asked to attend board meetings regularly, accomplish the tasks that you may accept on a voluntary basis, respect and follow the Code of Ethics of the association and, of course, pay your dues. Active and pre-active professional members pay 350 quetzals a year, while students pay 150 quetzals a year. Students with scholarship and honorary members have their fee waived.

AGIT is a member of the International Federation of Translators and maintains communication with the American Translators Association, the University of Arizona and other organizations from Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Spain, on all activities related to translation and interpretation.

Regularly, there are conferences, seminars and other events for you to attend. And every year this translation association awards an active member for his or her academic or professional excellence and/or social contribution with the Celeste Prize.

Keep in mind that the official language in Guatemala is Spanish. Around the world, Spanish is the second most natively spoken language, after Mandarin Chinese. It is estimated there are around 330 million Spanish speakers in the world.
