Translators Associations Europe: CIOL
Becoming a chartered linguist
 The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) was founded in 1910 and has over 6.000 members nowadays, between fellows, members and associate members.
This translators association, based in London, aims to serve the interests of professional linguists throughout the world and acts as a respected language assessment and recognised awarding organization delivering Ofqual (Office of Qualification and Examination Regulation) accredited qualifications.
The Institute is also actively involved in language issues at both a national and an international level.
This translation association promotes the learning and use of modern languages, makes an effort to improve the status of all professional linguists and establishes (and tries to maintain) high standards of work.
To ensure professional standards amongst language practitioners, this translators association has a Code of Conduct that all members must follow.
The Chartered Institute of Linguists acts as a forum for linguists in all areas of professional and academic life and publishes articles of both academic and practical interest on its journal, The Linguist.
The Institute's patron is HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO.
Becoming a member
The Institute is the only UK-based body serving all professional linguists, whatever their country of residence or specialism. That being said, know that by becoming a membership of the CIOL, you would access to a range of exciting benefits from the Code of Conduct to discounts on several products and services.
To apply you have to go to the website of the translators association and download a copy of the application form (there are two; one is for student members) and a document called Notes & Instructions.
Whether you are working as a freelance translator, interpreter or tutor, you have to remember to provide a detailed account of your work. Make sure to include details of the nature of the work carried out, clients, frequency, subject matter, length, number of hours or words per week etc. as appropriate.
Current subscription rates for admission are £139 for fellow members, £115 for members, £95 for associate members and £ 49 for registered students.
You can use the Institute's Find-a-Linguist service to find a translator, interpreter, language tutor or a business, industry, commerce & government language specialist. The service is available on CIOL’s website, as well as news on events and job opportunities.
