Its motorsport athletes, like Mika Hakkinen or Juha Kankkunen, are famous around the world. Around 5.4 million people live in Finland, with the majority concentrated in the southern region. It is the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland was a part of Sweden from the 12th to the 19th century, when it gained independence.
