Finnish tradition for translators and interpreters

The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (Suomen kääntäjien ja tulkkien liitto, SKTL) is a non-profit professional organisation whose aim is to foster professionalism and quality in translation and interpreting.

At the moment, this translators association based in Helsinki has approximately 1.900 members. They represent a set of various subjects within the translators profession, from literary translation to document and audiovisual translation, court interpreters, conference and community interpreters and researchers.

The Finnish translation association has long traditions, since it was founded in 1995. It has played a very relevant, acknowledged part in “the development of translation and interpreting in Finland”.

SKTL is an active participant in several international organisations. It also maintains strong links with other associations of the translation and interpreting sector all around the world. Other than sector organisations, SKTL is also involved in numerous literary organisations in the world.

The Finnish interpreters and translators association makes a point at warning translation costumers that it “does not provide any commercial translation of interpreting services”.

Keep in mind that the two national languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish. The official minority languages are three Sami languages, Romani, Finnish Sign Language and the Karelian language. Around the world, Finnish is spoken by approximately 5 millions of people.
