Ionian University's alumni united by a mission

The Panhellenic Association of Professional Translators - Graduates of the Ionian University (PEEMPIP) was founded in 2005 with the aim of promoting translation in Greece but also to provide translation services. The main purpose of this translators association is to promote the interests of all translators who have graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University.

The above-mentioned department is the only one in Greece that trains professional translators and interpreters at graduate and postgraduate levels. In accordance to a presidential degree, graduate translators of the Ionian University are considered certified translators – this applies to all members of this translation association – and “have the right to make official translations for the public and private authorities, both in Greece and abroad”.

In 2011, the Greek translators association organised a presentation of approximately three hours concerning the safeguarding of professional and general rights of the translation professional. According to PEEMPIP, “the event was a great success, with a massive turnout of students”. Specialists like Stafylas Demeter, Cleopatra and Maria Elaiotriviari Polychronopoulou presented their ideas on the subject.

Even though it as founded as a translation association in 2005, PEEMPIP has inherited the ideas, objectives, missions and motivations of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation of the Ionian University, which was founded in 1984, in Corfu.

PEEMPIP makes a great effort in providing graduates of the DFLTI with all means that will allow them to have successful careers in translation, built upon prestige and quality. At the same time, the translators association guarantees the graduates’ professional rights. With the help of the Ionian University, PEEMPIP is hopeful that its actions will bring even clearer results in the future. For days to come, the organisation wishes to focus on training and education.

According to its statutes, in order to become members of the Greek translators association, applicants must legitimately possess a university degree taken at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, with a specialisation in translation, and work exclusively in the field – as freelancers or for a translation company. A copy of the certificate that proves the existence of a degree must be provided when applying.

Those who wish to join PEEMPIP and meet the required criteria may complete the application form available online in PDF or MS Word format. The form must be accompanied with the documents referred on the association’s website and posted to PEEMPIP’s address in Katerini.

Upon completion of the registration process, the board of the association will produce a decision and, in case of approval, applicants will receive some important documents with their rights.

The members of this Greek translation association are regularly updated about the developments and progress of the board’s activities, efforts and events that concern the safeguarding of professional translation graduates from the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation of the Ionian University.

Keep in mind that Greek is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Native to the southern Balkans Western Asia Minor and the Aegean, it has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. It has around 13 million native speakers around the world.
