Translators Associations Europe: ITIA

Representing the interests of practicing translators and interpreters in Ireland

Translators Associations Europe: ITIAThe Irish Translators and Interpreters Association (ITIA) is a not-profit organization, founded in 1986 and based in Dublin, and the only professional association in Ireland representing the interests of practicing translators and interpreters.

This translators association was first called The Irish Translators' Association and was formed by Ann Bernard, Cormac Ó Cuilleanáin and J.F. Deane. It wasn't until 2002 that it became The Irish Translators and Interpreters Association.

The ITIA aims to promote the highest standards within the profession by demanding the highest professional and ethical standards of its members, who are required to sign up and adhere to the ITIA's Code of Practice and Professional Ethics.

In addition, in 2009, the ITIA introduced a 'Code of Ethics for Community Interpreters.

Another ITIA goal is to make translation and interpretation clients understand the highly-skilled and exacting nature of these professions.

The ITIA provides guidance to its members and also acts in an advisory capacity to Government bodies, non-governmental organizations, the media and everyone who's involved in the provision of translation and interpreting services.

An online database

On ITIA's website, you'll find an online database of professional members. That will help you if you ever need to look for a translator or an interpreter. ITIA also provides a general register of members in PDF-Format.

If you need a certified translation (for example, a birth or marriage certificate or contract) check-out ITIA's list of certified translators. You'll find professionals that are qualified to translate, stamp and certify documents for use in a legal context.

To join the ITIA, go to the website or contact the translators association using the email address itiasecretary@gmail.com. Know that candidates have to pay a fee between 25 and 250 depending on what category they apply to (Professional, Associate, Corporate, Institutional or Student/Concession).

Keep in mind that English and Gaelic are the two official languages in Ireland. English alone has 508 million native speakers troughout the world.
