The union representing interpreters and translators in the UK

The National Union of Professional Interpreters and Translators (NUPIT), based in the United Kingdom, was set up at the beginning of 2001 and has been growing ever. It represents public service interpreters, police and court interpreters, conference interpreters as well as specialized translators, from all over the world and with different backgrounds, languages, cultures and religions.

The aims of this translators association are to offer translators an interpreter’s legal advice and representation on terms of appointment and other information related to contract employment matters – pay levels, working conditions, safety, fair treatment.

This translation association wants to see professional interpreters and translators, that are well-qualified people, be properly rewarded for their work. And in the particular case of interpreters, NUPIT’s objectives have been to raise their standing and ensure good standards of training and qualifications.

As union members, interpreters and translators receive benefits and services from the union.

To join NUPIT, you need to meet the necessary conditions, such as proof of qualifications and experience. Having professional training such as the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) or a university interpreting and translation degree will get you in.

In short, you must be a professional interpreter or translator and able to show proof that you are qualified to work in the profession. This will entitle you to be included in the NUPIT online database.

Most of NUPIT’s current members are public service interpreters. Many are involved in court and police work; others work with agencies or for health authorities. Business and conference interpreters are a small but growing group. All of these people are self-employed and freelance.
The National Union of Professional Interpreters and Translators is a part of Unite the Union – Britain and Ireland’s biggest union –, an organization that includes many different professional groups, representing different professionals, from London Cab Drivers to specialist professionals in the health service, via surveyors and engineers.
 

Communication
 

To communicate with its members and the general public, this translators association has a magazine and a newspaper, newsletters, e-bulletins and an accessible and informative website.
