Canada is a North American country that consists of ten provinces and three territories. Spanning over 9.9 million square kilometres, Canada is the world's second-largest country by total area. Before being known as Canada, this land was inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. It was later colonized by the British and the French. Canada is a federal state that is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. Its population is of approximately 35 million people.
